The Surgical Assistant certified (SA-C)) carries out functions that will assist the surgeon in performing a safe operation with optimal results for the patient. The SA-C has acquired the knowledge, skills and judgment necessary to assist the surgeon through organized instruction and supervised practice. The SA-C practices under the direct supervision of the surgeon. The SA-C does not concurrently function in the scrub nurse role. Serves patients from neonate, infant, pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric.


  • Provides a safe environment for patient and staff by implementing standards of aseptic technique and by controlling the physical and psychological aspects of that environment.

  • Communicates effectively with the patient, staff, physicians, and families.

  • Maintains knowledge of equipment set-up and function.

  • Prepares for surgical cases in an efficient manner, anticipating needs of patient and surgeon, and provides creative strategies in meeting those needs.

  • Applies knowledge of surgical anatomy, physiology, and operative technique relative to operative procedures wherein the SA-C assists.

  • Provides hemostasis by clamping blood vessels, coagulating bleeding points, ligating vessels and by other means as directed by the surgeon.

  • Provides exposure through appropriate use of instruments, retractors, suctioning and sponging techniques.

  • Handles tissue as directed by the surgeon during the operative procedure.

  • Performs wound closure as directed by the surgeon; sutures the fascia, subcutaneous tissue and skin.

  • Applies surgical dressings.

  • Assists with transferring the patient from the operating room.

  • Serves as a resource person to staff and physicians.

  • Functions in scrub role when not utilized as SA-C.


  • Participates in orientation and training of new personnel.

  • Supports and participates in departmental Performance Improvement projects.

  • Attends meetings and inservices.



  • Basic Life Support certified within six (6) weeks of hire. Acceptable credentialing bodies and certifications include American Red Cross CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer and American Heart Association Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers.

  • Proof of completion of Mandatory Reporter abuse training specific to population served within three (3) months of hire.

  • Completion of a Surgical Assistant program at an institution approved by the American Board of Surgical Assistants or by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs. Certification required.

  • Ability to read, write and speak English language.
