A Scribe is an associate who enters patient information into the electronic health record (EHR) under the direction of a provider during an office visit. The scribe assists the medical provider by accompanying them during the medical history interview and physical exam, recording details of both into the medical record. He/She assists the practitioner in retrieving or locating information in the EHR. This is an assistive role under the direct oversight and control of the physician. A scribe essentially follows the doctor around and writes word for word what the doctor says as they are examining the patient. Adheres to MercyOne's performance expectations and performs all defined services and other related duties in accordance with the mission, vision and values of MercyOne.
High school diploma or GED, plus specialized training as a Certified Medical Transcriptionist preferred.
One year transcription experience or completion of a medical transcription program preferred.
Working knowledge of medical terminology and accepted abbreviations, signs and symptoms, medication and diagnostic testing
-Knowledge of different medical specialties
-Recognition of physical exam process and ability to record exam details
-Computer proficiency and ability to quickly learn new applications
-Communication skills and the ability to coordinate and cooperate with multiple members of the health care team
-Organizational skills with focus on tracking patient care and improving patient flow
-Professional demeanor and recognition of privacy considerations for patients and families, sign and symptoms, medications and laboratory values
Ability to work under pressure with time constraints.
Ability to concentrate.
Excellent listening skills.
Excellent hand, eye and auditory coordination.
Ability to understand and apply relevant legal concepts (i.e. confidentiality)
Ability to work under direct supervision - Ability to proofread documents and identify errors.
