Functions as a staff development specialist to analyze learning needs and develop appropriate education plans to meet the needs of the service line and organization. Coordinates, influences, and assists with the integration of research findings into corresponding patient care standards and Cardiology procedure practice. Serves as a strong mentor and guide, with an emphasis on successful integration and orientation of newly hired staff into the organization. Collaborates with leadership and education professionals as a point of reference to coordinate, influence, and assist with the implementation of cardiology procedure care and related nursing activities for the cardiac patient.

Clinical Excellence/Patient Care - 10%

  • Encourages critical thinking and problem solving with team.

  • Develops and evaluates clinical orientation for staff in collaboration with team.

  • Analyzes program evaluations for areas of improvement or opportunities to augment learning.

  • Coordinates and assists in development, implementation, and evaluation of education provided to the team using formal and informal teaching methods.

  • Develops and evaluates competency based educational needs.

  • Performs a gap analysis to determine learning needs from system and service line issues.

Clinical Excellence/Patient Care - 10%

  • Serves on committees that plan, identify opportunities, implement solutions or direct service line or organizational initiatives and evaluate post implementation

  • Supports an environment of ongoing learning that empowers others, and supports shared decision making.

  • Supports in preceptor development and assigns preceptors to new hires.

  • Analyzes performance gaps and develops appropriate education plan.

Clinical Excellence/Patient Care - 50%

  • Supports leadership in regards to concerns/issues around staff clinical competence.

  • Demonstrates leadership skills among interdisciplinary teams to lead and drive change in healthcare and organizational culture.

  • Serves a positive role model for change.

  • Provides care and assigned to patients in procedural areas for the Cardiology Service Line.

  • Takes equal Call in a normal rotation with the Cardiology Team.

Clinical Excellence/Patient Care - 10%

  • Assists leadership with identification of available internal and external resources (i.e. help chain).

  • Collaborates with leadership and other members of the interdisciplinary team.

  • Collaborates with leadership to support implementation of evidenced based practice and/or potentially better practices into the department setting.

  • Seeks to understand through inquiry rather than assumption.

  • Evaluates, develops, and implements quality improvement strategies using evidenced based standards of practice and care.

  • Evaluates outcomes of practice, utilizing benchmarks, best practice, or research.

  • Participates and is a member of a Cardiology or Nursing Professional Organization.

Development and Patient Education - 10%

  • Mentoring preceptors in adult learning principles and competency based education.

  • Uses coaching skills to guide promote the strategic plan, unit goals, and development of individuals within the organization.

  • Uses formal and informal mentoring and “just-in-time” teaching methods.

  • Accepts responsibility for maintaining and developing personal level of skill and knowledge in the clinical area.

  • Contributes to and supports leadership in the establishment of an environment that promotes individual growth, job satisfaction, and nurtures professional practice.

  • Integrates and demonstrates FOCUS values and Expectations for Personal and Service Excellence to guide professional behaviors, while adhering to the policies and procedures of the organization.

  • Demonstrates the knowledge that patient and workplace safety is a priority by preventing errors, accidents and infections and reporting potential or actual concerns immediately

Basic UPH Performance Criteria - 10%

  • Demonstrates the UnityPoint Health Values and Standards of Behaviors as well as adheres to policies and procedures and safety guidelines.

  • Demonstrates ability to meet business needs of department with regular, reliable attendance.

  • Employee maintains current licenses and/or certifications required for the position.

  • Practices and reflects knowledge of HIPAA, TJC, DNV, OSHA and other federal/state regulatory agencies guiding healthcare.

  • Completes all annual education and competency requirements within the calendar year.

  • Is knowledgeable of hospital and department compliance requirements for federally funded healthcare programs (e.g. Medicare and Medicaid) regarding fraud, waste and abuse. Brings any questions or concerns regarding compliance to the immediate attention of hospital administrative staff. Takes appropriate action on concerns reported by department staff related to compliance.


  • Must have completed an accredited nursing program and possess a valid nursing license.


  • 2 years of clinical specialty


  • Current Iowa License to practice as a Registered Nurse

  • BCLS

  • ACLS

  • PALS


  • Excellent teaching and communication skills

  • Able to lead multidisciplinary teams

  • Able to problems solve and direct others

  • Expertise in research based problem solving.
