This role provides care to patients of all ages during surgical intervention. Practices directly under the supervision and direction of the surgeon, registered nurse circulator, or physician assistant during the intra-operative phase of patient care. Is responsible for preparing the operating room for the surgical procedure including the instruments, equipment, and supplies. Maintains the sterile field during the surgical procedure. Maintains competency as described in Brenner’s Novice to Expert in the frequently performed cases for the following specialties: General, Gynecology, Urology (open and closed), Robotics, Podiatry, Plastics, and Non CVS Vascular and Thoracic. The CST may also help serve in other roles on the surgical team and is expected to second or third or fourth scrub all surgical specialties. - Assumes the responsibility of maintenance of the OR department in a patient ready state, including cleaning and stocking of supplies/equipment.
Applies knowledge of surgical anatomy, physiology and operative technique relative to operative procedures.
Applies principles of sepsis and infection control.
Assists with position, prepping, and draping of the patient.
Assists with exposure through appropriate use of instruments, retractors, suctioning, and sponging.
Assists with handling tissue as directed and supervised by the surgeon during the operative procedure
Applies surgical dressings and stack drain reservoirs.
Promotes and maintains a safe and calm environment for patients by ensuring appropriate supplies and equipment are readily available.
Maintains the skill level requirement and functions as evidenced by competent performancein surgical cases and on call for General, Urology, Robotics, Gynecology and non cardiac CVS and Thoracic with completion of the skills checklist.
Assists with returning patients to their room upon completion of their procedure using an appropriate transporting device, upon request.
Sets up and maintains back table and mayo with appropriate instrumentation before and during the surgical procedure.
Takes a proactive role in cost containment by inventory control on all supplies.
- Completion of a course in OR technology required.
- Must already have and maintain or obtain within one year of employment as a surgical technologist, surgical technologist certification.
- Maintains Basic Cardiac Life Support certification
- Demonstrates clinical competence and serves as a role model in clinical practice.
