MercyOne Newton Medical Center is a fully owned hospital of MercyOne Des Moines Medical Center and a member of MercyOne Network.
It is located in the city of Newton, Iowa, county seat of Jasper County. Positioned on Interstate 80, the nation’s only east/west transcontinental interstate highway, Newton is about 30 miles east of the Des Moines metropolitan area, which has a population in excess of 400,000.

Our campus in Newton has 48 beds and about 200,000 square feet of space. Attached to the hospital is a 50,000-square-foot medical office building containing local physician practices and the hospital’s physical medicine and rehabilitation center.

POSITION SUMMARY: Responsible for the development and administration of efficient and professional operations of occupational and employee health services in accordance with company policies, practices, procedures, and applicable regulations to achieve the desired goals and objectives. The registered nurse would develop, plan, market, implement and grow an occupational health program while also helping to provide employee health professional care for employees, volunteers, students, agency staff and credentialed physicians. Responsible for managing workers compensation program, return to work clearances, and wellness program. He/She coordinates, consults, and collaborates care with other disciplines on behalf of the employees under the guidance of the MercyOne Employee Health Department.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
Adheres to standards of care for Occupational Health and Employee Health Nursing and demonstrates competence in the Occupational Health and Employee Health departments clinical practice area
Develops, plans, markets, implements and grows the occupational health program
Collaborate with outside resources for program development, such as healthcare providers, third-party administrators, legal advisors, medical director, regulatory agencies, etc.
Develops contacts and relationships with local businesses
Utilize epidemiological methods to define and monitor the health and safety needs of employees
Completes timely, accurate and complete documentation as required for departmental records
Handles administrative, client, and personnel information through strict confidentiality, protects the reputation and integrity of others and demonstrates a high level of trust
Provides oversight & clearance of pre-employment screenings for new employees, volunteers, students, agency staff and credentialed physicians.
Manages worker & volunteer population care from onset of injury/illness to safe return-to-work or an optimal alternative. Includes collaboration and frequent communication with Worker’s Compensation program carrier.
Collaborates, consults and promotes worker health by focusing on prevention, education, protection, and restoration of the employee.
Maintains proficiency in performing all testing and use of equipment.
Attends Environment of Care and other like meetings. Presents data relevant to this role at Infection Control meetings. Other meetings as appropriate to the scope of the work.
Demonstrates commitment to customer service
Evaluate and treat all injuries and illnesses in an efficient and professional manner within the scope of practice and consistent with clinical nursing guidelines
Guide and direct all referrals to outside healthcare providers and services
Provide or manage the required physical evaluation programs and services to meet regulatory requirement; such as OSHA, Department of Transportation, CDC, etc.
Verifies that practices, policies, procedures and programs comply with Federal, State and Local, and Worker’s Compensation laws, rules, regulation and guidelines, including the OHSA log
Assess healthcare needs, then implement and manage healthcare programs to improve health and facilitate return to work, maintain OSHA records/reports and worker medical files
Administer the company’s Drug-Free Workplace Program
Assist with the accident investigation program to identify root cause analysis of all incidents and near misses
Provide appropriate case management
Manage all cases to facilitate productivity, assuring appropriate care and return to work, including workers’ compensation, short- and long-term disability cases
Assist departments with identifying, evaluating and implementing accommodations/return to work options for workers with restricted duty
Contribute in the design of controls for injury prevention and health surveillance related to actual and potential hazards in the work environment
Identify primary, secondary, and tertiary prevention and health promotion strategies to optimize health of the population.
EDUCATION: Graduate of an accredited school of nursing
EXPERIENCE: Nursing experience in Occupational Health and Hospital based
Employee Health preferred. Knowledge and understanding of OSHA regulations, worker’s compensation law, and infection control preferred.
LICENSURE: Current license as a Registered Nurse from the State of Iowarequired. Holds and maintains current CPR and Mandatory Reporter certification.
Ability to bring an occupational health program from vision to reality
Interacts collaboratively and professionally with outside agencies and companies on behalf of MercyOne Newton Medical Center.
