Position Purpose & Summary

Assists in the production processes of the facility, safe environment and research processes related to individual(s) and/or work group(s) related to research trials.

Coordinates and ensures areas of responsibility of the swine team to support all aspects of research. Establishesobjectives and operating policies in these areas and assures everything is performed in a safe manner.

Principal Accountabilities

60% Production Management:

  • Responsible for farm productivity by leading farm workers to achieve production goals and assignments

  • Weekly reports sent to Facility Manager with actions identified for areas not meeting production targets

  • Responsible to coach, discipline, and enforce compliance

  • Fills in as needed in:

  • Isolation:

  • Daily checks, vax, Feed weigh back, husbandry

  • Farrowing:

  • Husbandry, treatments, culling, birth weights, farrow records, day 1 care

  • Breeding dept:

  • Feed/scrape, treat as needed, heat check, grouping animals, AI, moving animals

  • Record matings, treatments, etc

  • Evaluate semen

  • Ultrasounding

30% Facility/grounds/Safety Management:

  • Consistently assess and make recommendations of Sow herd numbers, inventory needs

  • Work with Elk River on gilt replacement and shipments

  • Inventory supplies needing to be ordered as needed

  • Assure maintenance of building is maintained

  • Assures CAN safety program is implemented a d enforced (safety audits, safety training/goals, record keeping)

10%Training Lead:

  • Contribute to the on site training for CAN employees on sow productivity and nutrition

  • Research/Data capture:

  • Measure and record feed weigh backs

  • Transfer data from animal scales/carts to laptop

  • Complete and hang sow feed/farrow data collection cards according to assigned trial treatment

  • Place and remove environmental temperature recorders in locations according to trial protocols

  • Maintain research data collection equipment in working order (i.e.: calibration checks)

Qualifications

Minimum Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent experience in related field.

  • 2 years of supervisory experience

  • Experience in maintain and meeting budget requirements

  • Ability to apply safety, employment practices and understands supervisor responsibilities.

  • Understands CAN/IC policy information and enforcement and compliance

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in swine production facility

  • College education in related field

  • Experience with STATs
