POSTDOCTORAL SCHOLARRequisition # 3085Position BasicsAdvertising Ends on:Extended Until Position is FilledAdvertising Started on:Monday, December 17th, 2018College:Carver College of MedicineDepartment:PsychiatrySalarySalary:$48,432.00 to CommensuratePosition DetailsFull/Part Time Status:Full TimePercent Time:100%Position Description:We are seeking a postdoctoral fellow to join the laboratory of Mark Niciu M.D. Ph.D. in the Department of Psychiatry and Iowa Neuroscience Institute at the University of Iowa Health Care. The Niciu lab is interested in the pathophysiology and experimental therapeutics of major mood disorders, particularly glutamate and subanesthetic-dose ketamine in treatment-resistant major depression. Another major aim is the identification, replication and dissemination of antidepressant response biomarkers. As an example, our group and others have observed that treatment-resistant depressed subjects with a family history of an alcohol use disorder in a first-degree relative have a greater and more sustained antidepressant response to ketamine. We are currently studying potential alcohol-sensitive multimodal, e.g. psychological, neurophysiological and neuroimaging, biomarkers to predict antidepressant response with greater sensitivity and specificity than family history alone. On the translational front, we use human-induced pluripotent stem cell (hiPSC)-based models, i.e. cortical-like spheroids, to study genetic, molecular and cellular mechanisms of disease and pharmacological response to racemic ketamine, bioactive ketamine metabolites and other compounds in the future. This is a postdoctoral position of pharmacological imaging in treatment-resistant depression. We seek to identify potential treatment response biomarkers and mechanisms of rapid antidepressant response to the glutamate modulator ketamine. To this end, we perform multimodal imaging - structural magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), resting-state functional magnetic imaging (fMRI) and magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) - at high-magnetic field strength (7-Tesla) with depressed subjects during medication challenge, i.e. alcohol and ketamine infusion. We are also interested in incorporating other imaging modalities in the future. The University of Iowa, Department of Psychiatry offers competitive salary, excellent benefits, and a collegial professional environment.
