One vacancy exists for a full time Physician Assistant (PA) in the Neurosurgery Clinic. The position responsible to the VA Surgical/Specialty Care Service Line Director. During assignment to the outpatient clinic the PA may be s supervised by any of the qualified physicians in Neurosurgery Department, by the attending physician or designee will be the direct supervisor of the PA. The PA will work closely with the specialty support staff and contract staff physicians.

Duties for this PA in the Neurosurgery Clinic will include but not limited to:
- Obtaining and interpreting a complete health history on patients seen in assigned clinical area.
- Performing a complete and problem-focused physical examination on patients seen in assigned area.
- Ordering lab tests, x-rays, CAT scans, MRIs, Ultrasounds, nuclear medicine tests, IVPs, mammography, electrocardiograms, ancillary tests, and other testing and consults necessary to arrive at an accurate assessment and diagnosis. Complex or unstable acute problems will be co-managed with the supervising physician(s). Referrals will be made as indicated for further assessment.
- Interpreting the history, physician examination and test results, employing a comprehensive clinical assessment to formalize a diagnosis. Make sound clinical judgment based on this evaluation adn formulate an individual treatment plan based on patient needs. Evaluate health outcomes and implement a revised assessment plan if indicated.
- Conferring with the supervising physician as appropriate for extensive testing, treatment modification, or admission and/or release of the patient.
- Developing a treatment plan with the supervising physician, if required. This may include writing orders, taking culture and sensitivities, removal of sutures and staples, dressing changes, conferring with Physical Therapy, and assigned duties by the supervising physician.
- Educating patients and their families regarding plan of care, preoperative and postoperative expectations, care rehabilitation, prognosis, treatment options, and side effects, if any, and treatments necessary for successful outcomes associated with surgical interventions or long term chronic care.
- Accepting phone calls from patient's support system, or other physicians regarding patients's treatment plan, status, or other care related concern. Return calls from patients, imaging, and lab result.
- This position will function as a first assist in the operating room, as needed. Work Schedule: This position will primarily be a day shift, Monday through Friday, 8 hour shifts, between the hours of 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM, with intermittent, unplanned extensions of the regular tour of duty as patient care needs dictate. Recent PA graduates who are eligible to take the Physician Assistant National Certifying Examination (PANCE) may be employed by VA on a temporary basis (38 U.S.C. 7405), for a period not to exceed two years, as provided in VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Chapter 3, Section G, Paragraph 5. 3. If a PA's NCCPA certification is suspended, revoked or expires, the PA must be removed from the occupation which may result in termination of employment. Preferred Experience: Neurosurgery Experience

Requirements for appointment or promotion to a specific grade are based on the candidate's ability to demonstrate the elements described. 1. Full Grade. In addition to meeting the basic requirements in paragraph 2, individuals appointed to this grade must meet all the following requirements:None beyond the basic requirements in paragraph 2 of this standard. 2. Intermediate Grade. In addition to meeting the basic requirements under paragraph 2 above, candidates must meet all requirements described in this standard for Full Grade through VA employment or non-VA PA positions with equivalent scope and complexity. Individuals appointed or advanced to Intermediate Grade will have demonstrated the ability to analyze and solve more complex medical problems and meet the requirements listed in VA Handbook 5005/78, PART II, Appendix G8 3. Senior Grade. In addition to meeting the basic requirements under paragraph 2 above, candidates must meet all requirements described in this standard for Intermediate Grade through VA employment or non-VA PA positions with equivalent scope and complexity. Individuals appointed or advanced to Senior Grade will have demonstrated the behaviors or responsibilities listed in one or more of the following categories: Clinical Proficiency, Education, Professional Development, Management/Administrative, and Research, as applicable to the assignment. 4. Chief Grade. In addition to meeting the basic requirements under paragraph 2 above, candidates must meet all requirements described in this standard for Senior Grade through VA employment or non-VA PA positions with equivalent scope and complexity. Appointment or promotion to Chief Grade is based on the individual's demonstrated high level of clinical expertise, leadership ability, and the ability to function with a high degree of autonomy. Further, the PA candidate for Chief Grade will have demonstrated all the requirements of one or more of the following categories: Management/Administrative, Clinical Proficiency, Professional Development and Research.
