Registered Nurse- Behavioral Health Coordinator—Emergency Department/Berryhill

FTE: 0.8 (Full-time, 32 hours per week)

Shift: Weekend Package- 2 out of 3 weekends

Essential Functions/Responsibilities:

Key Accountability

  • Assesses the needs of Behavioral Health patients and families, providing appropriate teaching and making the necessary referrals to provide continuity of care.

  • Develops an individual plan of care using a collaborative approach with the patient/family and health care team that focuses on connecting community resources and providing appropriate level of care.

  • Promptly completes documentation to assure an accurate legal record of patient’s care.

  • Delivers high quality care utilizing, while demonstrating, knowledge and clinical skills of the specialty required on assigned unit in accordance with established policies, procedures and standards of care.

  • Utilizes holistic approach (considering biopsychosocial, spiritual, educational, safety, and related criteria) appropriate to the age of the patients and families served in the assigned service area.

  • Utilizes critical thinking in making independent judgments, and maintains responsibility and accountability for the knowledge of conditions of assigned patients.

  • Collaborates with physicians and nursing staff in developing clear discharge criteria.

  • Facilitates referrals and connections to appropriate community resources

  • Provides ongoing follow-up services to patients upon discharge, including phone contact for up to 30 days or as needed.

  • Arranges for transportation to services within the community.

  • Completes patient documentation detailing the services that have been provided, patient’s mental health diagnosis, and next steps in treatment process in a timely manner.

  • Assists with other Nursing duties as assigned within the Emergency Department

· Completes all annual education and competency requirements within the calendar year.

· Is knowledgeable of hospital and department compliance requirements for federally funded healthcare programs (e.g. Medicare and Medicaid) regarding fraud, waste and abuse. Brings any questions or concerns regarding compliance to the immediate attention of hospital administrative staff. Takes appropriate action on concerns reported by department staff related to compliance.

Minimum Requirements

Associate Degree in Nursing required.

Bachelors in Nursing preferred.


Work experience that includes mental health services

Emergency Department and/or Behavioral Health RN


Current license in the state of Iowa by Iowa Board of Nursing.


Ability to maintain current professional expertise. Exhibits discretion and sound judgment in all aspects of the job.

Promotes positive interpersonal relations and serves as a role model within the department and with hospital personnel. Writes, reads, comprehends and speaks fluent English.

Electronic and mechanical patient care equipment, office equipment, medications, including controlled substances and therapeutic gasses.

PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT: Gloves, goggles, protective gowns, masks.
