Contributing to Our Mission:

The Transportation Engineer Associate will work in a variety of civil engineering capacities within the District, including:

  • Assisting the Fairfield Resident Construction Engineer providing oversight and administration of construction projects; ensuring that highway construction work is accomplished in accordance with all contract documents; performing construction inspection, contract administration, project finalization, and other duties in the office.

  • Assisting the Assistant District Engineer with design function in District Office; assist with development of project plan development in the District Office, assist with development of project design concepts, assist with development of 3R and MP programs for District, coordinate project quantity estimate needs with Resident Engineer Office staff.

  • Assist with Traffic Operations and Traffic Systems and Management Operations (TSMO) function in District Office.

  • Open communication with peers, other IDOT offices, contractors and the public is very important to the success of the projects and the office. Working conditions will generally be outdoors. Applicants must have the ability to work safely in and around construction sites.

Licensure:Applicant must also possess an Engineer certificate issued by the Iowa State Board of Engineering Examiners within 18 months of hire. Licensure as a professional engineer is required within 9 years of hire for continued employment as a Transportation Engineer Associate.

Work Hours:7:45 AM to 4:30 PM, Monday through Friday, normal work hours

Travel:This position will require some overnight travel.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

Applicants must meet at least one of the following minimum requirements to qualify for positions in this job classification:

  • Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a bachelor's degree in chemical, civil, construction, environmental, materials, mechanics, structural, or transportation engineering or in engineering management.

  • Possession of a verification of graduation with major course work in chemical, civil, construction, environmental, materials, mechanics, structural, or transportation engineering or in engineering management.
