Broadlawns Community Clinic at Drake 

Lab Assistant

Performs analyses on blood and body fluids to aid health care providers in the diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment of patients. Moderate complexity testing may include manual or automated techniques using sophisticated instrumentation. Responsibilities include but are not limited to: phlebotomy, instrument operation and maintenance, troubleshooting assays, evaluating test results for accuracy, resulting test values in a timely manner, and assisting with interpreting results.

Characteristic Duties:

  • Performs various waved and moderate complexity testing procedures on blood and body fluids in the assigned area of Chemistry, Hematology, or Microbiology. Assessment of techniques and competency takes place during the first six months of employment and annually thereafter.

  • Produces accurate and precise results under time constraints, multi-tasking, and performing in a fast-paced and changing environment while maintaining absolute integrity of test results.

  • Recognizes, confirms, and reports critical test values directly to the physician and documents that the result was called.

  • Performs equipment checks, maintenance, calibration, and quality control on all equipment in assigned laboratory area. Able to recognize, troubleshoot, correct and repair instrument malfunctions (or obtain outside service) and document all maintenance performed.

  • Performs quality control on all tests performed when appropriate. Evaluates quality control data and implements corrective action when necessary.

  • Receives, prepares, and checks reagents. Restocks supplies at the bench. Notifies supervisor when additional supplies are needed.

  • Works cooperatively with peers, gives and receives constructive feedback, and may assist with training of new employees.

  • Maintains exceptional communication skills, both verbal and written, in order to effectively interact with department leadership and staff of all levels while complying with HIPPA guidelines.

  • Identifies potential problems, actively searches for solutions and continually provides input to team regarding ideas and recommendations.

  • Maintains a positive demeanor and is professional in both appearance and approach.

  • Observes safety, fire, incremental weather, and infection control standards and regulations.

  • Maintains a clean, neat, and safe working area while observing safety and infection control regulations and universal precautions.

  • Participates in monthly department meetings and continuing education, including proficiency testing.

  • Accommodates scheduling adjustments, off-shifts, holiday, and weekend work assignments.

  • Embraces and supports Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion initiatives.

  • Performs phlebotomy as needed.

    Schedule

    Generally scheduled Monday - Friday, 8am - 6pm. Includes a weekend rotation.

    Qualifications 

  • High school diploma or GED

  • Trained phlebotomist or CMA with at least 2 years ’ experience

  • Knowledge of medical and laboratory terminology

  • Efficient computer skills
