Department Summary:

The Office of Sponsored Programs Administration & Research Compliance (SPARC) provides Drake University's faculty, staff and students with comprehensive guidance and support in their pursuit and conduct of research and scholarly activities.

SPARC works collaboratively with the research community to assist them in advancing Drake's mission of teaching, research and scholarship and provides them with the highest quality customer service and technical expertise.

SPARC provides assistance in five primary areas: Pre-Award, Post-Award, Research Compliance, Technology Transfer, and Training.

Job Summary:

We will determine the most suitable job title for the selected candidate—Grants Accountant or Senior Grants Accountant—based on their knowledge, skills, and abilities.

Generally, the selected candidate will read, review, and interpret award documents to ensure award setup is complete, and provides notification to campus units of award information. The position is responsible for maintaining good cash flow through proper invoicing/payment and timely financial reporting of assigned sponsored awards. For the grants assigned to this position, the selected candidate will also be responsible for a variety of post-award administrative activities and also the financial closeout of sponsored awards.

We would love someone who also has an interested in pre-award work—looking for grant opportunities, assisting with the grant-writing process. Whoever we hire, we will want someone who can work alongside and collaborate with the rest of the SPARC team, including the Director, to whom they would report, and the existing Grants Accountant, Senior Grants Specialist, SPARC's partners across the Drake University campus, and numerous granting agencies.

Minimum Qualifications:

• Bachelor's degree

• Excellent interpersonal skills, ability to provide a high level of customer service and establish and maintain effective interdepartmental communications and relationships

• Ability to manage numerous simultaneous projects

Preferred Qualifications:

• Degree in Finance or Accounting

• CPA or CMA Licensure

• Experience working in higher education

• Experience working with foundations and/or federal granting agencies

• Experience with (or an interest in) grant research and grant writing

Job Duties:

25% - Responsible for all post-award financial administration of grants and contracts. Maintains a working knowledge of ever-changing government cost principals and administrative regulations for grants, assuring compliance and accountability with federal, state, and private grant regulations and policies of Drake University. - (Essential)

15% - Consults with Principal Investigators on post-award issues such as applicable regulations, equipment purchases, subcontract administration, extensions, re-budgeting, Facilities & Administrative (F&A) costs, and cost share requirements. - (Essential)

15% - Reviews all contracts, awards, budgets, and agreements for grants. Supports pre-award grant research and grant writing. - (Essential)

10% - Ensures that all financial reports are prepared and submitted to management and governmental (sponsoring) agencies as required, including external invoicing, cash draws, A-133 Audit Schedules, 269 Quarterly Reports, and 272 Reports. - (Essential)

10% - Collaborates and partners with the other Grants Accountant on training and compliance. - (Essential)

5% - Trains current and prospective Principal Investigators and/or their staff in post-award grant procedures and Federal, State and Private Granting regulations. - (Essential)

5% - Establishes Banner general ledger numbers and budgets. Monitors all post-award expenses and income, including in-kind/match, personnel, and equipment inventory. - (Essential)

5% - Monitors all subgrant contracts, performing financial audits of subgrantees when necessary. - (Essential)

5% - Calculates F&A (indirect) cost rate and Benefits Rate for submission to the federal government. - (Essential)

5% - Provides oversight to ensure compliance with time and effort reporting. Performs other duties, as assigned. - (Essential)
