As Director of Tax, you will contribute to the achievement of corporate and team objectives by advising on issues relating to all types of taxation. You will be responsible for all aspects of IRS and state taxing authority filings, examinations and appeals, including monitoring pending legislation/current developments in federal and state taxation and the implementation of tax planning strategies to benefit the company. With a demonstrated commitment to quality and internal/external customer service, you will provide information to customers and strategic partners, coach teams, and initiate changes to team processes. In addition, you will lead the tax area staff and their operations to achieve corporate/divisional goals and participate in cross-functional work process teams.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business or related field.

  • 7+ years of experience in taxation in a corporate environment and or an accounting firm.

  • Experience completing and reviewing corporate federal income tax returns.

  • Demonstrated implementation of corporate tax planning strategies.

  • Experience coordinating audits of federal income tax provision.

  • Strong knowledge of applicable corporate tax rules, regulations, and key interdependencies.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of GAAP and SAP tax computations and related tax footnotes.

  • Strong leadership experience with the ability to coach, engage, and develop team members.

  • Demonstrated understanding of accounting systems, financial statements, and reports.

  • Able to consult effectively and think strategically to develop recommendations that blend expertise with business/stakeholder needs and influences decisions.

  • Able to effectively articulate complex information to diverse audiences, including senior leaders and external partners.

  • Develops collaborative relationships with peers, team members, and stakeholders.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • CPA

  • Master’s Degree

  • Health insurance industry experience

a. Provide the strategic direction and leadership for team that supports Wellmark divisional strategy and goals. Cascades and communicates strategy and initiatives to team members and to the organization, ensuring overall compliance with taxation regulations.

b. Provide day-to-day leadership of financial and human resources, focusing on employee and leader coaching, development, performance improvement, coordination, budgeting and forecasting for staff and department specific functions/services.

c. Current and deferred tax amounts are computed and accurately reflected in the GAAP and SAP financial statements by review of the computed amounts and following ASC 740 and SSAP 101.

d. Annual corporate federal, state and premium tax returns are filed timely and liabilities are minimized by continual monitoring of changing tax laws.

e. Monitors pending tax legislation at state and federal levels and advises management.

f. IRS adjustment proposals are reviewed and written responses are prepared.

g. Protests and strategies are developed for the Appeals Division of the IRS by performing detailed tax research and consultations with outside tax advisors.

h. Represents the Company in groups such as the BCBSA Tax Advisory Group, Tax Executives Institute, The Iowa Taxpayers Associations and the Iowa Association of Business and Industry.

i. Other duties as assigned.
