Principal Counsel - Multiple Areas in Des Moines, Iowa

ERISA Attorney

Principal is seeking an experienced attorney with a broad knowledge of issues impacting retirement plans and annuities to join our ERISA/pension legal team. This team handles a wide range of sophisticated legal work for Retirement and Income Solutions, the strategic business unit of Principal that works with retirement plan advisors, plan sponsors and TPAs to deliver financial services to employers and individuals. This lawyer will provide legal advice relating to the daily operation of qualified and tax-favored retirement plans and savings vehicles, product design, fiduciary responsibilities, prohibited transaction rules and retirement product distribution. The ideal candidate would be familiar with a range of investment products offered to retirement plans and participants and the issues related to those products. Experience with institutional trust/custodial services or prior ERISA/retirement plan work in a financial services company is a plus. Relocation is optional.

Corporate Tax Attorney

Job Summary -- Principal is seeking a tax attorney with a minimum of 10 years of corporate taxation experience. The lawyer in this position will work as part of an integrated tax attorney team that provides tax support to Principal’s business units and its Corporate Tax Department. The lawyer will be handling a variety of sophisticated tax issues, and experience in any of the following areas would be a plus: Insurance Company Taxation, Partnership Taxation, Commercial Real Estate Taxation, Investment Taxation, Mutual Fund Taxation, Insurance Product Taxation, HR and Employee Benefits Taxation, or Transfer Pricing. Relocation is optional.

Trust and Custody Attorney

Job Summary -- The Principal Financial Group (PFG) is currently seeking a lawyer to support the trust and custody business of the Principal Financial Group (PFG). The trust and custody business also supports the retirement business of PFG. This lawyer will provide legal advice relating to trust and custodial operations, trust and custodial agreements, product design and fiduciary responsibilities. The ideal candidate would be familiar with a range of trust and custody issues. Experience providing legal services with respect to trust and custodial services associated with ERISA retirement plans, executive compensation plans, and foundations and endowments is a plus. Experience working with banking regulators and outsourcing issues and providing legal services with respect to general banking activities is also a plus. Relocation is optional.

  • Requires JD with at least 8 years of experience as an attorney.

  • Must be admitted to practice in the state employed within twelve months of hire.

  • Requires knowledge of the relevant area of law and its application.

  • Must be able to work as a member of a team and independently on a self-motivated basis.

  • Requires superior written and verbal communication skills.

  • Must be able to apply knowledge of the law to make sound judgments, communicate, and interact with others in a professional manner.

  • Informal leadership experience is preferred.

  • Some travel may be required.
