GENERAL DESCRIPTION

The Behavioral Health Chief of Medicine reports to the Chief Medical Officer.   In partnership with the Assistant Vice President (AVP) of Behavioral Health, the Behavioral Health Chief of Medicine is jointly responsible for leading the Broadlawns Medical Center (BMC) Behavioral Health Service Line with a focus on strategic vision, quality, and operational efficiency.  This position provides clinical leadership to promote and guide an integrated healthcare approach for the service line.  In addition to directly supervising the service line’s physician leaders, the Behavioral Health Chief of Medicine maintains a 50% clinical practice.

CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES

  • Sets the clinical vision and outcome expectations for the comprehensive Behavioral Health Service Line.

  • Establishes the cultural tone for the BMC’s Behavioral Health mission.

  • Ensures that patients accessing a behavioral health service are offered a high level of quality care.

  • Embraces the dyad leadership model of the service line in equal partnership with the AVP of Behavioral Health.  

  • Provides clinical leadership to the service line.

  • Directly supervises BH Section Chiefs/Leaders including Acute Psychiatric Services, BH Outpatient, Psychiatric Residency Program Director, and BH Urgent Care/Community-Based Medical Director.

  • Develops and executes strategic plans and detailed process improvements to support an integrated healthcare environment.

  • Insists on purposeful standardization of processes with the intention of developing well-coordinated programs across the Behavioral Health Service Line.

  • Makes timely decisions with authority in support of the Behavioral Health Service Line mission.

  • Ability to garner and inspire physician and nonphysician support of the service line mission.

  • Provides bi-directional communication in collaboration with the AVP of Behavioral Health.

  • Supports the psychiatric residency program associated with BMC and closely liaisons with key Psychiatric Residency Program stakeholders.

  • Routinely rounds with behavioral health colleagues operating within the behavioral health spectrum of care.

  • Through strong operations and strategic planning, enhances behavioral health patient throughput.

  • Ensures alignment of the Behavioral Health Service Line with the BMC mission.

  • Leverages the skills of behavioral health leadership and clinicians to present a clear organizational structure.

  • Promotes positive public relations.

  • Works with non-behavioral health leaders, clinicians, and other personnel to ensure the Behavioral Health Service Line is offering coordinated systems that positively impact care and interface well across the organization.

  • Investigates, responds internally and externally to complete corrective action reports for external agencies and internal processing.

  • Attends conferences and regularly reviews publications and literature related to field.

  • Embraces and promotes evidence-based practices.

  • Embraces and supports Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion initiatives.

  • Maintains a 50% clinical practice within the Behavioral Health Service Line .

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

  • Maintains a 50% clinical practice within the Behavioral Health Service Line.

  • Actively participates in dyad meetings with intentional agendas and predefined action outcomes.

  • Ensures quality and appropriate care is delivered.

  • Monitors patient throughput throughout the behavioral health system while guiding clinicians to be nimble and active partners toward a highly efficient, coordinated/cohesive Behavioral Health Service Line.

  • Delivers clinical expertise.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

     

  • Board-certified MD or DO in psychiatry.

  • Licensed to practice in the state of Iowa.

  • Ability to collaborate and make tough decisions.

  • Five-plus years of clinical experience as a practicing physician psychiatrist.

  • Broad psychiatric experience/exposure in outpatient settings, resident education programming, psychiatric inpatient environments, and psychiatric urgent and/or emergency medicine.

  • Three years of leadership experience within a behavioral health environment.

    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

     

  • One-year or more of executive leadership experience.

  • Clinical experience through assigned positions across each behavioral health service setting:

  • Outpatient

  • Resident education programming/teaching

  • Inpatient

  • Urgent Care

  • Emergency Department

  • Community-Based settings
