UnityPoint Health Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist in Des Moines, Iowa
A qualified Anesthesia professional (Advanced Practice Nurse) involved in the administration of anesthesia and related services as delineated by the clinical and nonclinical responsibilities described herein. Collaborates with Physicians/Surgeons and Anesthesiologists to manage the anesthetic needs of the patient. Scope goes from initial evaluation (pre-operative assessment) to discharge, including care in PACU.
An Advanced Practice Nurse ensures proper anesthesia and pain management. Oversees patient intra-operatively throughout recovery and responds immediately to patient needs.
The following is a list of anesthesia, and related clinical services, responsibilities of the individual anesthetist.
Preanesthesia/patient assessment, requesting laboratory/diagnostic studies and preanesthetic medication
Anesthesia plan: General/Regional/Sedation
General anesthesia and adjuvant drugs
Regional anesthesia techniquesEpiduralLower extremity, poplitealTopical/Local per Surgeon
TAP Blocks (abdominal procedures) – intra: Surgeon, post: Anesthesia
Upper extremity, interscalene, axillary
Cardiopulmonary resuscitation management – part of preparation as well as management.
Patient assessment including:Evaluation of labs, diagnostic studies ordering additional as needed.Reassures patient that the CRNA will be with the patient from start to finish, induction to emergence.Place IV’s as needed.
Give pre-anesthetic medications as needed.
Building rapport with patient and family, and answering questions.
Systemic evaluation and discussion of procedure.
Anesthesia plan:Discussion of anesthesia options and risks/benefits of each, (General vs Regional vs Sedation/ and what is safest.
Discussion of patient health history as it relates to anesthesia
Anesthesia Preparation:Monitors patient throughout procedure and makes anesthetic adjustments as needed according to patient reaction.Patient will be monitored in recovery for any adverse reactions to anesthesia.
Assesses patient after procedure is done and transfers them to recovery.
All needed drugs, IV fluids, and equipment made ready in OR prior to patient arrival (as well as any emergency, CPR drugs and equipment).
Management of Patient:Invasive and non-invasive managementIV’s, arterial lines, central linesPost Anesthesia care
Pain management trauma
Fluids, electrolytes, acid-base management, blood products
Airway management, including oxygen therapy and mechanical ventilation.

Cardiac Catheterization Procedures

OPS - Pre-op Assessments and Phase II prior to discharge.
Holds current state licensure as a registered nurse in the state of Iowa, and complies with any applicable state statutory or regulatory requirements concerning advanced practice registered nursing.
Graduate of a nurse anesthesia educational program accredited by the Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs or its predecessor.
Complies with one of the following requirements regarding certification eligibility, initial certification or recertification:
Meets criteria 1 and 2 above, and is awaiting initial certification (some states limit this period of time); or
Is currently certified by the Council on Certification of Nurses Anesthetists or its predecessor; or
Is currently recertified by the Council on Recertification of Nurse Anesthetists.
