Arconic SMART Project Manager in Davenport, Iowa

Since it opened in 1948, Arconic's Davenport, Iowa aluminum facility has been at the forefront of American manufacturing. Nestled on the banks of the Mississippi River in Iowa, the plant employs 2,400 people and is a focal point of the global aluminum industry. Through continued modernization, including a $300 million investment over the past decade alone, Davenport has maintained its position as the world’s premier aerospace supply plant and is today the hub of Alcoa’s $3 billion aerospace business.

Arconic is currently in search of a SMART Manufacturing Project Manager to join our Global Rolled Products (GRP) Operations business unit in Davenport, IA.

Arconic has an exciting opportunity for a SMART Manufacturing Project Manager (SMPM) to increase the use of digital and physical automation across the plant and the opportunity to inject ideas and influence a growing data-driven culture and gain operational experience with Big Data. Responsibilities for this position are the following (but not limited to):

  • Manage Davenport Works SMART Manufacturing projects (both capital and expense) as well as manage the data analysis tools, business planning through Hoshin Kanri process.

  • Coordinate efforts between several different groups/departments/skillsets (Engineers, Data Analysts, IT, Finance, SCM and others) to perform “what if” analyses and question existing assumptions and processes.

  • Communication of recommendations to both Operational and IT leaders and collaborate with the Technical Center, Process Engineers and IT department to utilize hidden potential in the manufacturing systems.

  • Responsible for managing the analysis of Davenport Works’ data across processes to tell a story and make recommendations.

  • Investigate relationships among variables across a variety of functional disciplines but primarily manufacturing operations (e.g. performance metrics, cost components, quality data, design parameters, machine parameters, process characteristics, etc.).

  • Work closely with the Data Analyst(s) to identify and correct data limitations (e.g. signal / noise ratio, sample size, inconsistencies, missing values, corruption, etc.). Key initiatives include the design and implementation of dashboards, development of key metrics, scorecards, delivery of self-service analytics, and the identification of competitive advantages from data.

  • Guide and direct small teams to achieve project objectives including the set up and execution of smart manufacturing deployment across Davenport Works.

  • Build and maintain a strong relationship among all of the Davenport support/staff departments as well as Operations. This includes a strong tie to our IT group as well as Supply Chain, Finance, Engineering, etc.

  • Building a yearly plan/strategy and work closely with the Continuous Improvement teams to build an overall plant strategy; plan, develop, create actions, and execute sustainability efforts on improvements made in processes

  • Support our SMART Engineers in the plant in project-oriented initiatives creating additional business value through implementation of SMART tools.

  • Accountable for project management, development, deployment, compliance, and life cycle management; team leadership and/or contract resource management at various stages of projects, support lifecycles, and will have responsibility for the management and oversight of significant contracts with third party providers and partners for services as required.

  • Work with plant resources to develop and execute SMART Manufacturing Projects to deliver $9M annually (equivalent to 1% revenue to increase EBITDA by 1 percent) by increasing use of digital and physical automation across Davenport

  • Develop and help implement best practices for SMART Manufacturing processes and Data Analysis that allow for Sustaining Gains and driving Continuous Improvement

  • Improve existing Daily Management and Reliability systems at all levels to spend less time getting the data and more time problem solving with the data

  • Improve execution of projects and sustainability using Continuous Improvement and Project Management tools

  • Oversee and support the development of best practices regarding use of digital sensors to move to predictive reliability systems which will dramatically reduce unplanned downtimes

  • Engage in initiatives for improving quality with improved data analytics including SQM, recipe controls, process controls, and digital thread

  • Identify and duplicate processes across the GRP plants to improve safety and labor efficiency with targeted physical automation implementation

  • Support plant problem solving process related activities and information requirements

  • Participate in the development of strategic technical plans

  • Work with and sometimes lead diverse teams and achieve results in the process control, data analytics and automation of processes

  • Establish metrics for process control and automation systems performance measurement and benchmarking

  • Work with the Center of Excellence (CoE) Operational Excellence and technology groups to ensure deployment of standard practices and technologies

  • Coordination of technical needs and services to provide common solutions and information sharing

  • Oversee the application and programming work, including oversight for work done by third party for common solutions

  • Meet all required Arconic Audit, Engineering and Safety Standards, and compliance expectations for the development, deployment, and support of the process control and automation systems.

  • Travel may be required satellite locations in Danville, IL, Hutchinson, KS, and San Antonio, TX.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelors degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Information Technology or Business from an accredited institution

  • Minimum 3 years of experience in SMART Manufacturing work and or other related IT projects

  • Minimum 3 years of experience in project management

  • Minimum 3 years of Lean Manufacturing and/or Continuous Improvement experience

  • Employees must be legally authorized to work in the United States. Verification of employment eligibility will be required at the time of hire. Visa sponsorship is not available for this position.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Advanced Degree

  • Metals manufacturing experience

  • Experience with having provided solutions in SMART Manufacturing

  • Experience teaching others SMART Manufacturing

  • PLC experience; familiarity with Rockwell hardware preferred

  • Knowledge of engineering and process control principles to manufacturing and facilities processes and equipment to enable safe and reliable operations and meet business objectives

  • IT background (or related experience) necessary to understand the SMART Manufacturing technology and terminology to effectively manage projects, make recommendations and work with diverse teams
