Transports, collects, receives, prepares and accurately tests biological specimens using procedures consistent with safe work practices and proper laboratory technique while maintaining integrity of specimens. Critically evaluates specimens and correlates all lab results to the clinical picture of each individual. Communicates and documents all testing and results in a timely manner to clinical personnel involved in patient care. Maintains and operates test systems for optimal performance, being able to identify and resolve technical problems, utilizing quality control methods and troubleshooting techniques. Follows CAP and all regulatory guidelines, demonstrating consistent adherence to national patient safety goals. May assess and approve competency of other techs and staff.
Bachelor’s degree in Medical Technology or foreign equivalent. Alternatively, the employer will accept the equivalent of a Bachelor’s degree in Medical Technology, or a Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry, Physical or Biological Science with completion of 12 months of training in an accredited school of Medical Technology. Certifications required – Certified eligible or certified as a Medical Laboratory Scientist or Medical Technologist by ASCP, AMT, NCA or HEW or specialty board by ASCP for state of Iowa.
