Job Title: Automation Controls Engineer

Employment Status: Full-Time

Location: Coralville

Purpose statement:

The Automation Controls Engineer are responsible for the design, development and upgrade of machine controls for a diverse array of custom DNA manufacturing equipment in a high throughput biology manufacturing environment.

Essential Functions:

  • Researches, plans, specifies and designs machine controls, data collection and process control hardware and firmware to support DNA production and research activities.

  • Works with project teams to development, design and test laboratory automation equipment from concept to product delivery. Products include combinations of pneumatic, liquid handling and mechanical systems, actuators, sensors, vison and robotic systems controlled by PLC’s, analog, digital and/or industrial control systems.

  • Works closely with customers and product development teams to identify and document testable design requirements.

  • Develops electrical and computer system designs including the following: SCADA systems, Electrical schematics, panel layouts, and product bill of materials. These would be documented in CAD or CAD Electrical.

  • Programs PLC’s and HMI’s, develops and standardizes machine controls systems, software modules, electrical and internet systems interfaces.

  • Controls and maintains department electrical and safety design standards such as CE Compliance, risk assessments and relevant sections of the NEC, OSHA, EPA and NFPA codes.

  • Works in the lab to assemble, test and optimize prototype design work.

  • Works closely and in conjunction with Instrument Integration engineers to develop efficient product integrations with Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS) and engineering databases.

  • Develops and adapts safety and quality systems for new and existing software.

  • Participates in periodic project reviews to keep projects on track and provides reports to managers

  • Contributes proactively to the project planning and scheduling. Works with project managers, consultants and management to achieve on-time product deliveries.

  • Verifies and validates electrical and software designs meet performance requirements.

  • Demonstrates behavior consistent with the Integrated DNA Technologies Core Values.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or other STEM fields required; Advanced degree preferred

  • Senior level Engineer with minimum of five or more years of electrical engineering and software development experience in industrial or laboratory automation required.

Professional Experience:

  • In-depth understanding of computer software, databases and programming required.

  • Proficiency in automation equipment/system design prototyping testing and troubleshooting required.

  • Demonstrated proficiency with software writing tools, version controls and other modern engineering software applications including proficiency with PLC programming required.

  • Experience with Beckhoff TwinCat/EtherCat or similar control systems preferred.

Visual Acuity:

  • Work requires close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.

  • Ability to prepare and read written documentation; use of computer.
