Description:

Position Purpose

Responsible for ensuring compliance of coding through auditing, training, and monitoring Clinic coding staff. Conducts quality monitoring of provider documentation and code selection. Acts as mentor and coach for coding staff. Provides or facilitates training opportunities. Serves as member of the Clinic Support Services Department Leadership Team and Clinic Compliance and Integrity Team.

What You Will Do

  • Conducts quality auditing and monitoring of coding completed by clinic coders. Prepares reports and corrective action plans with the support of the Coding Leads and Manager. Communicates discrepancies and corrective plans in a professional and supportive manner.

  • Monitors providers coding patterns through use of Histograms or similar tools and identifies areas for improvement. Develops plan to include working directly with providers or working in conjunction with on-site coder to correct deficiencies.

  • Monitors effectiveness of education through changed documentation or coding patterns. Seeks assistance from manager, clinic managers, and/or regional directors when barriers are identified.

  • Through audit process, assesses skills of coders and identifies opportunities for education and training. Provides or helps arrange for needed training.

  • Travels frequently to clinics to provide education to coding staff, clinic staff, and providers.

  • Works closely with coders to develop effective communication with providers. Monitors feedback to assure clarity and understanding.

  • Keeps current with Medicare, Medicaid, and other insurance bulletins. Shares information as appropriate.

  • Reports coding/reimbursement issues to the Coding Manager on a routine basis.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High School diploma or equivalent.

  • College coursework in coding, anatomy and physiology, medical terminology preferred.

  • Current coding certification required: Certified Coding Specialist (CCS), Certified Coding Specialist – Physician Based (CCS-P), Certified Professional Coder (CPC). Will consider other credentials.

  • Minimum of three years coding experience

  • Leadership experience preferred.

  • Self-motivation and ability to remain objective in conducting audits.

  • Critical thinking and analytical skills

  • People-oriented with the ability to foster a work environment of open communication, trust, support, and active employee participation. Independent decision-making skills required.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

  • Demonstrates judgment, tact, and professionalism in dealing with other healthcare professionals, physicians, and the public.

  • Ability to problem solve using practical problem-solving methodology.

  • Ability to establish success metrics and coach others to achieve them.
