Job Description:Summary of Duties and Responsibilities:

Iowa State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine, in Ames, Iowa, is seeking to hire a key strategic position to support research within the Department of Veterinary Clinical Sciences (VCS). The candidate’s role in VCS will be primarily research, but a minor hospital role in the candidate’s clinical specialty is also desired. While the individual will have significant time allotted to their own research/lab, the ideal candidate will also have a desire to collaborate with other departmental faculty members and/or mentor early career faculty in establishing their research careers. Iowa State University has extensive and broad areas of research as well as having significant expertise in Translational and One Health medicine. The College of Veterinary Medicine is nationally and internationally recognized for its leadership in animal, human, and One Health research. We invite applicants for this position at the rank of Associate or Full Professor within the Department of VCS to enhance the clinical research capacity of the department and college. Rank will be determined by the qualifications, documented experience, and research interests of the selected candidate.

This position will include approximately 70% effort in developing and sustaining a vigorous, extramurally funded research program that focuses on translational, comparative, and/or clinical research. The remaining 30% will be determined, based on mutual agreement, and distributed between professional practice, teaching, and institutional service. The successful candidate will have documented evidence of active and clinically impactful research and scholarship that contributes significantly to clinical research activities of the department, college, and profession; will have national or international prominence as a clinical thought leader based on their research, successful grants, and scholarly accomplishments; and possess the experience and skills necessary for mentoring professional and graduate students and early career faculty. All areas of specialty certification and clinical research will be considered including, but not limited to: internal medicine, cardiology, surgery, dermatology, neurology, oncology, ophthalmology, gastroenterology, theriogenology, nutrition, diagnostic imaging, immunology, genetics, and pharmacology.

The College of Veterinary Medicine has dynamic faculty representing all disciplines of basic science and clinical medicine. Modern laboratory space and animal facilities are available in the college. Excellent opportunities exist for collaboration with faculty in other colleges and several interdepartmental programs/centers.

Required Minimum Qualifications:

  • DVM or equivalent degree

  • Graduate degree in biomedical science field or other clinical specialty degree

  • Board certified in an American of Veterinary Medicine Association or equivalent recognized veterinary medical specialty

  • Documented clinical research and scholarship evidence that is nationally validated by peer review activities

  • Evidence of national scholarly, clinical, or educational presentations

  • Documented evidence in successful grant writing activity

  • State of Iowa Veterinary License on or before first day of employment

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Documented evidence of sustained grant awards, including federal level funding

  • Documented record of consistent scholarship production through manuscript preparation, peer-reviewed publications, and research presentations at national and international meetings

  • Evidence of established extramural funding for a core research laboratory

  • Demonstrated ability to mentor early-career faculty, graduate students, and other trainees in research activities

  • Evidence of collaboration in clinical research activities, including the ability to work with diverse groups of clinical and basic scientists

  • A demonstrated clinical research focus that will enhance the current clinical research collaboration in the Department of Veterinary Clinical Sciences, the Lloyd Veterinary Medical Center, and the overall research activities of the college

The LVMC is a state-of-the-art facility designed to provide specialized care and comprehensive medical and surgical services for companion and large animals throughout Iowa and surrounding states.
