Summary of Duties and Responsibilities

The Department of Animal Science at Iowa State University is seeking qualified candidates for the position of Research Assistant II. The position will work directly under the supervision of Dr. Joshua Selsby with expectations in facilitating efforts relevant to his roles within the Animal Science Department.

This position will be responsible for executing research projects with pigs with limited supervision and will oversee basic and applied science research operations in the Selsby Lab involved with our biomedical and agricultural research program. The candidate will be expected to lead efforts to characterize a novel porcine dystrophinopathy model by performing in vivo functional measures, working in the lab to perform histological and biochemical measures, and the resultant analysis and initial interpretation of data, and supervise undergraduate students. The candidate will evaluate and adjust experimental protocols to identify and/or rectify methodological problems and ensure successful project completion in a timely fashion. The candidate is expected to organize, and in some cases, interpret experimental data for research manuscripts and funding proposals, attend team meetings to plan projects and experiments, share results, and to ensure that projects support current team goals. In addition, a critical component of the Research Associate II’s responsibilities will be managing the research compliance efforts of the research program.

The successful candidate will be comfortable working with pigs, possess a strong understanding of research, have strong oral and written communication skills, possess the ability to effectively multitask and has demonstrated experience in the Microsoft Office Suite. The incumbent will be expected to be highly organized, keep careful records, have the ability to think independently and effectively troubleshoot scientific experiments and field work. The ideal candidate will also have strong problem-solving capabilities, the ability to work well as part of a research group, and maintain high standards of integrity and ethics.

Required Education and Experience

Bachelor’s degree and 1 year of related experience.
