Summary of Duties and Responsibilities

The College of Veterinary Medicine at Iowa State University is accepting applications for a Research Associate I or Research Associate II to work within the Molecular, Virology, Heath Assurance Testing Service (HATS) section (MVHS) at the Iowa State University Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory (ISU VDL). The ISU VDL is a full-service veterinary diagnostic laboratory engaged in missions of service, teaching and research on a daily basis. The laboratory receives more than 80,000 submissions from veterinarians and researchers annually.

As a Research Associate I, this position will provide expertise in veterinary laboratory diagnostic techniques and perform a variety of laboratory diagnostic assays. The position will perform virus isolation and propagation using cell culture. Additionally, the position will receive and process a wide spectrum of samples including tissues, blood, fecal samples, environmental samples, and other specimen types and is responsible for determining the suitability of the samples for testing. In some cases, contacting clients directly to discuss testing requests and results will be necessary. The Research Associate conducts polymerase chain reaction (PCR) based testing and analysis of results. Furthermore, the position performs antigen-capture Enzyme Linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA), and fluorescent antibody testing for rabies and other viral agents. This position will evaluate the quality control of tests conducted and analyze test results. While this position may be involved with some small research projects related to test development, the primary function of this position will be performance of diagnostic tests on samples submitted to the laboratory. The position may train new technical staff in conducting a variety of laboratory procedures. In collaboration with other research associates, this position will facilitate the quality assurance program of the laboratory.

As a Research Associate II, this position will perform the duties described for a Research Associate I and have the ability to perform a much broader scope of diagnostic testing and associated tasks that makes the Research Associate II position more versatile in multiple testing roles throughout the laboratory. The primary function of this position is to perform multiple, highly complex, real-time, gel-based or quantitative PCR (polymerase chain reaction) based testing using different PCR platforms followed by thorough analysis of the results. In addition, this position will be responsible for conducting PCR tests implemented by the National Animal Health Laboratory Network. This position requires independent interpretation of test results and troubleshooting unexpected testing outcomes, inconsistent or inaccurate results and/or laboratory cross-contamination. Additional testing may include, but is not limited to, viral and bacterial genetic sequencing, cell culture using a variety of cell lines, virus isolation and fluorescent antibody testing for rabies. In collaboration with the other section employees, this position will facilitate the quality assurance program of the laboratory. This position will evaluate the quality control of tests that are conducted, and actively participate in evaluating the performance of existing and newly developed tests as well as writing detailed standard operating procedures for diagnostic tests, processing, virus isolation and personal protective equipment. This position will require more extensive contact with clients to discuss testing needs, clarify test requests, explain unexpected results, and conduct retests where needed.

Supplemental Required Education and Experience

Research Associate II qualifications: Bachelor’s degree and 1 year of related experience.

Preferred Education and Experience

  • Degree in microbiology or a related field.
  • Experience in a veterinary diagnostic service or industrial biological laboratory.
  • Experience and/or demonstrated working knowledge of laboratory assays.
  • Experience or demonstrated knowledge of quality assurance/quality controls.
