Unit Specific Position Responsibilities
Assesses nursing care needs of the GI patient population .
Prepares patients (pediatric through geriatric) for GI procedures. Considers age, growth and development of the patient when planning, teaching and providing care.
Assists physicians with procedures.
Sets up, verifies proper working order and operates all equipment used in the GI services department. Sets up equipment for procedures and ensures necessary supplies are available.
Maintains an adequate supply level in procedure rooms and utility rooms- monitors, orders, receives and shelves department stock items.
Assists in inventory management, ordering and restocking supplies as needed.
Documents and maintains data on electronic medical record.
Applies teaching/learning concepts to patient and family education for the GI patient.
Functions as leaders when delegating/supervising aspects of care to team members.
Assists with transporting and clerical functions.
Follows and maintains radiation safety standards as outlined in the radiation safety manual.
Monitors patients under moderate sedation for patients’ physiological and psychological needs and responses according to clinical guideline.
Maintains a clean, orderly, and safe patient care environment, implements and follows infection control procedures according to hospital policy, SGNA guidelines, regulating agencies and manufacturers’ recommendations for the cleaning and disinfections of equipment.
Provides basic and advanced life support and initiates emergency care.
Assures patient safety with medication administration and treatment procedures.
Assures safe therapeutic environment for patients, families, visitors and staff.
Qualifications, Knowledge & Experience
Required Qualifications (Including any licensure, certification, education):
Licensed as a Registered Nurse and authorized by the State of Iowa to practice nursing or eligible to take licensing exam within four months of hire.
Graduation from a school of nursing or in final semester of nursing school.
Achievement of Baccalaureate degree in nursing within 6 years of hire if hired after January 1, 2014.
Basic Life Support (BLS) training, or within 90 days of hire and must maintain throughout employment.
Mandatory Reporter training or within 90 days of hire and must maintain throughout employment.
If hired prior to graduation and licensure, must graduate and become authorized by the State of Iowa to practice nursing within four months of hire.
De-escalation training prior to performing direct patient care or within 90 days of hire
ACLS certification within one year of hire.
Baccalaureate degree in nursing.
Professional certification in nursing specialty.
CGRN certification in nursing specialty.
Two years experience in an acute care setting.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills & Experience:
A minimum of 2 years experience in Medical/Surgical clinical experience.
Ability to demonstrate clinical competence and maintain current knowledge in caring for infant through geriatric patients.
