Job Description:Summary of Duties and Responsibilities:

The Department of Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering, jointly administered by the College of Engineering and the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at Iowa State University, invites applications for a full-time term position of Professor of Practice in Engineering Design and Project Management. This is a 9-month position with job responsibilities in teaching and mentoring students.

The successful candidate will teach the following required courses within the Agricultural Engineering (AE) and Biological Systems Engineering (BSE) majors: a sophomore-level course in project management and design, and a two-course senior-level capstone sequence in which student teams select and complete engineering design projects, often in response to the needs of industry partners. These courses are critical to the accreditation of the AE and BSE degree programs, and successful candidates must be willing to work closely with the relevant committees to document student learning in these courses.

The successful candidate will have a strong industry background in topics relevant to either or both AE and BSE students, a track record of successfully training or mentoring early-career engineers, and an ability to effectively communicate and collaborate with potential industry stakeholders and project sponsors.

Required Minimum Qualifications:

  • A Bachelor of Science degree in engineering.

  • At least fifteen years of relevant industry experience with US-based companies, or fifteen years of a combination of academic and US-based industry experience with at least five years of relevant industry experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Professional Engineering (PE) license, or currently qualified to sit for the PE Exam

  • At least 50% of industrial experience relevant to AE or BSE

  • Deep familiarity with relevant engineering standards

  • Experience in engineering project management and associated software

  • A demonstrated track record of training and mentoring engineering teams

  • An ability to collaborate and network across units or organizations

  • Teaching experience (broadly, does not have to be at university level)

The Department of Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering offers accredited BS degree programs in Industrial Technology, Agricultural Systems Technology, Agricultural Engineering, and Biological Systems Engineering, as well as MS and PhD programs in Industrial and Agricultural Technology, and MEng, MS, and PhD programs in Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering.
