Renewable Energy Group Manager, Payroll in Ames, Iowa

About the role

As Manager, Payroll Operations you will lead and manage all aspects of payroll for over 800 employees (and growing) across the United States. You will support global expansion and provide insight for 3rd party vendors to ensure payroll accuracy and compliance in multiple countries. You will have the chance to serve as a key contributor to a high growth environment and strengthen your understanding of both operational and technical payroll processes.


  • Ensure an accurate and timely multi state payroll, including but not limited to base pay, stock compensation, bonuses, payroll taxes, statutory and supplemental benefits, etc.

  • Assist with stock plan administration, including but not limited to stock grants and distribution approvals and review, monthly reporting, and corporate and participant maintenance.

  • Lead payroll development and implementation process for new countries or entities, as needed.

  • Develop team target goals and performance measures; enhanced skills and abilities; recruitment and redeployment; and address personnel issues, as appropriate.

  • Ensure team can meet expanding business needs without compromising service quality. Ensure cross training is adequate throughout to ensure business continuity.

  • Research incorrect information received, determine the proper accounting treatment, and recommends corrections to the transaction originator

  • Develop and produce required and requested payroll and accounting reports, ensuring accurate, meaningful, and timely information.

  • Assess internal controls continuously and develop checklists and monitoring tools to ensure proper and consistent application of payroll processes.

  • Manage design and delivery of training programs relative to payroll systems, policies, and procedures.

  • Work with HRIS and business partners to ensure payroll transactions are reported accurately and timely.

  • Work with HRIS to ensure upgrades and enhancements to payroll systems are fully tested and completed in a timely manner.

  • Leads and take ownership of assigned projects; ensure project goals are timely met; maintain detailed project documentation

  • Ensures compliance with federal, state, and local payroll, wage, and hour laws and best practices.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree with Accounting/Finance/Human Resources discipline strongly preferred

  • 5+ years of experience in accounting or payroll

  • Experience with Workday payroll

  • Excellent understanding of multi-state payroll and taxes at the federal, state and local level

  • Demonstrated knowledge of accounting, internal controls, policies and regulations, including the ability to research and interpret new regulations and policies, applicable to Payroll.

  • Solution-oriented mindset and strong problem-solving skills

  • Strong leadership and management skills with proven ability to develop an effective team.

  • Demonstrated ability to effectively manage deliverables and timelines.

  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate well and work effectively with cross-functional teams to achieve desired results.

  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and negotiation skills necessary to articulate conclusions and recommendations clearly in a respectful manner.

  • Demonstrated ability to shift priorities and manage multiple tasks with competing priorities.
