Mary Greeley Medical Center House Manager Non Exempt in Ames, Iowa
Under general direction, provides clinical support for patient care and services. Provides management insight into problem-solving. To promote and assure quality nursing care to the patient in compliance with the Nursing Department and medical center. Under general administrative direction, provides organizational leadership in the development, implementation and maintenance of service consistent with the Mission, Vision, Values and Strategic Plan of the Mary Greeley Medical Center. Ensures all actions taken in carrying out responsibilities support patient centered care.
Unit Specific Position Responsibilities
Consults with appropriate unit / department supervisor or director concerning staffing and department issues, needs and problems.
Consults with administrator on-call concerning administrative issues, needs and problems.
Provide input to director on work performance of staff.
Acts as a resource person to medical center staff and actively participates in problem solving and/or priority setting. Coaches, mentors and supports staff in orientation and new hires.
Interprets and effectively communicates hospital policies and procedures. Assists with smooth implementation of medical center initiatives regarding new policies, procedures and technology.
Ensures cost effective and proper utilization of supplies, equipment and human resources.
Performs continual rounds to nursing units and Emergency Department.
Guides and evaluates systems of patient care delivery.
Recommends and implements policies and procedures to foster an efficient and effective nursing program.
Maintains assigned records and reports.
Communicates with Environmental Services regarding room cleaning when census is high.
Performs related work per orientation and position competency checklists and skills validation.
Manages guest house availability.
Utilizes the PRIDE program and other resources to recognize employees’ achievement of the medical center’s values.
Demonstrates knowledge of the Human Resources policies and compensation program and assists in communicating this organizationally.
Supports medical center-wide educational and leadership development initiatives.
Fosters positive employee engagement and a team-oriented environment throughout the medical center.
Instills a culture of customer service by emphasizing responsiveness, resourcefulness, follow-through, accuracy, timeliness and accountability.
Establishes and maintains liaison with medical staff and allied health care professionals and services for improvement of patient care.
Participates in the development and communication of the Medical Center's policies, procedures, programs and services and ensures compliance.
Establishes work schedules and assignments for staff, according to workload/patient volumes.
Monitors the use of diagnostic services, inpatient beds, facilities and staff to ensure effective use of resources and assess the need for additional staff, equipment and services.
Acts as liaison between patient, staff, physician and family when necessary and maintains open communication.
Assists with placement and scheduling of nursing personnel and adjust as need arises, basing decisions on clinical judgment of lead nurses as well as projected needs based on acuity.
Utilizes safety practices in daily activities.
Initiates disciplinary action when immediate action is required.
Responds to all codes.
Communicates with other departments as necessary to facilitate quality patient care.
Evaluates and ensures the quality of departmental programs and services and promotes quality improvement.
Ensures that departmental policies are consistent with legislative regulations, accreditation standards and other external controls on Medical Center operations.
Provides direction to continuously improve care and services.
Ensures departmental compliance with regulatory agencies.
Monitors dashboard indicators to ensure communication and understanding of their importance and develops and implements plans to improve performance.
Ensures awareness of Joint Commission standards and ensures a state of continuous readiness.
Accountable to the hospital's overall disaster plan, communicates as required, and ensures nursing participation.
Serves on medical center committees as appropriate.
Activates Cath Lab, OR and GI teams when needed. Add/cancel OR cases.
Answer/refer questions from AM admits who call.
Knows bed availability on all units at all times.
Makes bed assignments based on unit admission criteria.
Participates in the development, maintenance and implementation of the Medical Center's strategic plan.
Supports strategies to enhance physician recruitment and retention.
Ensures staff learns new skills needed to support new and/or expanded programs and services.
Provides appropriate information to news media and the community.
Ensures implementation of best practices to enhance medical staff relationships.
Provides input to and supports strategies for aligning organizational marketing plan with Mary Greeley Medical Center’s goal to be the regional health network of choice.
Establishes, coordinates, and maintains effective relationships with counterparts in the healthcare community.
Promotes awareness of health care trends and issues.
Seeks opportunities for volunteer involvement in community and professional organizations and encourages others in the organization to seek volunteer involvement also.
Qualifications, Knowledge & Experience
Required Qualifications (Including any licensure, certification, education):
Licensed as a Registered Nurse and authorized by the State of Iowa to practice nursing.
Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers (BLS) training completed or complete within 90 days of hire and must maintain throughout employment.
Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) training completed or complete within 90 days of hire and maintain throughout employment.
Baccalaureate degree in nursing or health care related field.
De-escalation training prior to performing patient care or within 90 days of hire.
Mandatory Reporter training within 90 days of hire and must maintain throughout employment.
Combative Patient Response Team training within 90 days of hire and must maintain throughout employment.
Professional certification in nursing specialty.
Required Knowledge, Skills & Experience:
Three years of clinical experience in an acute care facility.
Demonstrated leadership abilities.
Considerable knowledge of theory, techniques and practices of professional nursing; considerable knowledge of treatments and medical procedures; considerable knowledge of report and record preparation and maintenance; knowledge of management theories and supervisory techniques; considerable knowledge of hospital services available; considerable knowledge of emergency procedures.
Ability to plan, provide and maintain nursing standards; ability to evaluate nursing personnel performance; ability to serve as resource person and effectuate good communication within the institution and with the media and public.
Skill in communicating effectively; skill in providing nursing care; skill in supervising and coordinating nursing care activities.
Skill in effective oral and written communication in English.
Knowledge of basic arithmetic, algebra, statistics, and their applications.
Knowledge of the structure and content of the English language including the meaning and spelling of words, rules of composition, and grammar.
