Summary of Duties and Responsibilities

The Digital Agriculture Innovations Team within the the Department of Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering at Iowa State University is accepting applications for a Test Engineer I who will provide technical support to engineering and precision agriculture research projects in advanced machinery engineering.

This position will provide key technical support for the design and implementation of test fixtures, data collection, and documentation associate with sponsored research in the field of advanced machinery engineering and precision agriculture. These responsibilities include providing leadership to test fixture design and construction; integration of mechanical, hydraulic, and electronic systems; research test execution; partnering with suppliers to meet critical timelines; and installation of sensors and data collection systems. Managing project scope, schedule, and resources through written and verbal communication will be required for this position.

The successful candidate will demonstrate the ability to work independently; complete projects within a specified timeline; meet design criteria; communicate effectively with team members; and ensure a safe working environment for all project staff. This position is a part of the ISU Digital Agriculture Innovation Team ( This team of professional staff and graduate students work closely with agricultural industry partners to develop innovative technology solutions for agriculture. The team has a strong innovation record of patents and licensed technologies. Required Education and Experience

Bachelor’s degree and 1 year of related experience; OR a combination of education and related experience totaling 5 years.

Supplemental Required Education and Experience

Preferred Education and Experience

Degree in Agricultural Systems Technology, Agricultural Engineering or related field.

Experience with common agricultural equipment.

Experience with test fixture design and construction, including functional machinery prototypes that include agricultural material handling.

Experience with industrial sensors and electronic data acquisition and vehicle CAN bus communication networks.

Experience executing engineering tests and collecting data in various field environments.

Additional Information

The duties of this position require travel approximately 30% of the time, including domestic and international travel.

Vacation must be used during term of appointment or it is forfeited upon termination.
